ONCOLOGY

Quirón Barcelona's clinical excellence is achieved thanks to authorities such as Dr Josep Baselga, Head of Oncology at Quirón and medical director at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr Baselga is one of the world's leading experts in the study of new and effective cancer treatment methods. He is the first incumbent of the Chabner Chair in Haematology Oncology at Harvard Medical School and is a permanent member of the Scientific Council of the American Association for Cancer Research and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. A great promoter of translational research, Dr Baselga leads the latest research on the molecular changes and use of molecular biology and growth receptors in breast cancer therapy and the implications of these factors in the treatment strategy. His achievements have been honoured with numerous awards and accolades, including his breast cancer research project which was recognised by the European Research Council as the leading European project in the field of oncology.
Also part of Hospital Quirón Barcelona's Instituto Oncológico Baselga [Baselga Institute of Oncology] is Dr Josep Tabernero, one of the most cited authorities on gastrointestinal cancer by the world's leading experts in the field. His main areas of research are clinical oncology of the digestive system and the development of new drugs for cancer treatment. Dr Tabernero is currently directing multicentre international trials of new drugs in the treatment of gastrointestinal tumours. He also leads a number of European Union projects whose aim is to identify prognostic and predictive factors of response to molecular therapies.
The Instituto Oncológico Baselga at Quirón Barcelona is considered to be one of the world's foremost cancer treatment centres, with its multidisciplinary approach and state-of-the-art radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery techniques. Quirón Barcelona's Instituto Oncológico Baselga is also able to offer immediate reconstructive surgery with psychological support, with a special wellness and beauty department, and alternative therapies.

GENERAL SURGERY

Hospital Quirón's Instituto Quirúrgico [Surgery Institute] is run by Dr Antonio de Lacy, an authority on cancer surgery and surgery for inflammatory bowel disease. Dr de Lacy is both pioneer and the world's leading expert in NOTES (natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery). He is also a pioneer and leading expert in the application of the transumbilical SILS technique (single-port laparoscopic surgery) and bariatric surgery. He is one of the most-cited surgeons in the world with the most outstanding results in his field (the lowest incidence of postoperative complications, the highest survival rates, experience in unique operations and number of interventions).

ORTHOPAEDIC AND TRAUMA SURGERY

The Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Department at Hospital Quirón Barcelona is run by Dr Ramón Cugat, founder and president for many years of the Asociación Española de Artroscopia [Spanish Arthroscopy Association], full member of both the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is a world authority on orthopaedic surgery and pioneer in the use of growth factors in orthopaedics. Over the course of his career, Dr Cugat has operated on some of the world's best athletes.

NEUROSURGERY

Dr Enrique Ferrer is one of the most brilliant neurosurgeons in the world. He is a pioneer in new minimally invasive precision techniques, such as robotic neurosurgery, and performed the world's first remote-control-guided neurosurgery operation. Dr Ferrer is President of the Asociación de Neurocirujanos de España [Spanish Association of Neurosurgeons], President of the Comisión Española de Neurocirugía [Spanish Neurosurgery Commission], member of the Committee for Ethical and Medico-Legal Affairs of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and Faculty of Medicine Professor at the University of Barcelona. Dr Ferrer has been honoured with national and international awards and has taken part in over 30 research projects. He is one of the world's leading authorities in introducing and developing the latest cutting-edge techniques in neurosurgery: neuro-microsurgery, neuronavigation, remote-control-guided robotic surgery, new techniques in spinal surgery, Parkinson's disease surgery and pioneer in developing neuro-endoscopy.
Dr Pablo Clavel, Chief of Neurosurgery at Hospital Quirón Barcelona, has participated in dozens of published articles in national and international journals, chapters in books specialising in neurosurgery and presentations at world congresses. Dr Clavel is immersed in a lifelong learning process which has led him to participate in numerous national and international studies. Among the most important of these are his participation as principal investigator for a European Union project on custom-made implantable medical devices and on courses on neuro-oncology, neurovascular pathology and intracranial pressure monitoring.
In the same specialty, Dr Gerardo Conesa is a recognised expert in the surgical treatment of diseases of the brain and spine, above all in the areas of tumours and vascular neurosurgery, and has received numerous awards and honours. He was responsible for setting up the world's first programme for localising brain function and intraoperative mapping of cortical functions, and what has become the foremost training centre for many neurosurgeons from all over the world. He is a pioneer in introducing virtual reality to the neurosurgery operating theatre and introducing transcranial magnetic stimulation system.

ASSISTED REPRODUCTION

In 2010, Dr Ramon Aurell, Medical Director of Hospital Quirón Barcelona's Assisted Reproduction team, achieved the first birth in Spain where facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy was prevented using preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is an innovative technique which can be used to detect genetic and chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo before it is transferred to the mother's womb.
Dr Aurell has been a full member of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) since 1999, and since 2000 he has also belonged to the Sociedad Española de Fertilidad (SEF) [Spanish Society of Fertility], which is affiliated with the International Federation of Fertility Societies, and to the Sociedad Española de Ginecología y Obstetricia (SEGO) [Spanish Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics].
The world's leading experts, the most advanced technological resources, an individualised, personalised and confidential approach and the highest standards of care and comfort for patients make Hospital Quirón one of the most renowned private hospitals in the world.
